Our next sub-series in Paul’s ancient letter to the young church in Corinth, Greece, is identified and divided by Paul’s own words. As helpful markers throughout the letter, Paul typically changes subject with the phrase “now concerning,” or a similar play on these words. We get this phrase at the beginning of Chapter 8 and then an abbreviated version at 11:2. This leads us to see Chapters 8-10 as a unit, and when we read them it is clear that they tackle the same subject from multiple applicational angles. So what is this section about? Idolatry for sure (referring back to 5:10 and 6:9), but also much more.

Idols Among Us, as a series title, will hit differently for different people. This section is based on the problem of idolatry in ancient Corinth, but quickly expands into community relationships, a misunderstanding of freedom and ministry, a lesson from the Old Testament, and application around a Corinthian slogan we’ve seen before. And lest you think idolatry is an archaic relic of the past, I advise you to reconsider and reevaluate. Idolatry, properly defined, is timeless and part of the human condition in this corrupt world. Idols exist in plenty today. They may be more subtle and acceptable, but they are not any less deadly.
